Our Community Achievement Award

We Won The Haringey Community Achievement Award!!

So after running an amazing Networking Party on Thursday where nearly 400 people attended, we get a phonecall to say we have made it to the finals of the Haringey Community Achievement Awards. We were in no mood for jokes, we were tired! This couldn’t be real, like what have we done? (See, we can be modest and humble!).

The event was organised and held at the Haringey Irish Centre and there were 8 categories.

  • The Award encouraging community participation and prevent isolation.
  • The Award for building trust and co-operation between people and improve neighbourliness, friendship and fun.
  • The Award for promoting a feeling of belonging to the area and pride in the community
  • The Award for encouraging self-help in the community
  • The Award for building bridges between diverse communities
  • The Award for building bridges between the generations
  • The Award for contributing to the voluntary sector and increasing local democracy.
  • The Award for an outstanding contribution to the voluntary sector in Haringey – Public Vote

We were shortlisted for the ‘building bridges between generations’ category. We think that means we made friends or were nice to people who were alive when they only had 4 TV channels!

We were nominated by Fitzroy Andrew, the bossman of Haringey Association of Voluntary and Community Organisations (HAVCO). He thought we were good at building relations with adult members of the community by telling them good news about local young people and challenging any negative perceptions they may have had.

We couldn’t believe we had won, there were so many people who were also up for awards that did amazing things in the borough.

Anna from our team had this to say:  “We are so shocked and happy to have won this award. Having our hard work recognised by the community we love so much is an honour. None of this would be possible if Haringey did not have so many amazing young people to celebrate in the first place.”

We would like to thank Fitzroy for nominating us. We would also like to thank Tony Brennan and Annie Whyte from the Haringey Irish Centre for organising the awards. Last but not least, we’d like to thank the wider Selby Trust family for their support.
